Kitimat is a coastal port community set in the beauty of the rugged northern BC coast and located approximately 650 km northwest of Vancouver. As a Pacific Rim gateway, the surrounding Coast Mountains create a sheltered harbour 96 km from open water, suitable for deep sea transport.
Quality of life is balanced here; housing is affordable and economic opportunities are many and varied. Active west coast living is supported by Indoor and outdoor recreation facilities and the pristine surrounding wilderness.
Kitimat’s plan created a town systematically divided into residential neighbourhoods, a town centre, a service centre, and an industrial area. The central business district contains all major stores, commercial buildings and government offices. This area is organized as a pedestrian friendly mall rather than a main street.
Kitimat is one of Western Canada's emerging energy hubs. LNG export, natural gas liquid handling, bitumen export, condensate import, co-generation power facilities, aggregate processing and new hydro projects are in place or under discussion. Untapped oil & gas basins in this region may help the Port of Kitimat become a centre of oil and gas exploration.
Kitimat is a world‐class port and manufacturing centre in the Pacific Rim region, occupying a strategic location in Canada’s Asia‐Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative. Kitimat has substantial existing infrastructure, secondary industries, a skilled workforce and ample space for new industrial development.
